I finally visited the audiologist in Kingman and was referred for hearing aids for both ears to help with hearing higher tones. Higher tones help distinguish some consonants, especially s's.

Whether this lack of hearing is due to loud noises, such as at Del Monte, or listening to kids' garage bands or is genetic I could not say. Suffice it to say others in the family have also had hearing loss, siblings and kids, which may mean it is more genetic.

I have had tinnitus for over twelve years. There was the hope that adding hearing aids may effect this for the better. However after three weeks I have not noticed any difference.

When I have the hearing aids in sometimes they tickle the insides of my ears which canbe frustrating. I have always had dry flakey inner ear and the hearing aids do not help.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8MQopKrjkD4WRTzhFZjF_ZwKWK4gZ6JVbiEGiH0DhbGPrRGOz4RDdTXyAlcdgu4EJrtF0C1oN60zBJpH55MzqPZSQmLAxsPJ50onbxL-rtFfFc6O_2qPRHhYz4UBNbr5FB3sC2Z6HmwYaPrUyBaAdzVv_yDk675m9rHy2mv98ZhBItvcUsGf0zOxEcg/s2314/Scan%201.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Earlier this year one of the students passed away in a tragic accident. The students had placed an ofrenda for him. I was amazed how many of the students were using the ofrenda to remember their friend, and to grieve, including my son. Helping others has the added benefit of making you feel better as well.
<li style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 13px; background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: initial; background: url("/Content/Images/orange_square.gif") 0px 13px no-repeat; border-bottom: none; border-image: initial; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; clear: both; float: left; margin: 0.1em 0px 0px; min-width: 95%; outline: 0px; overflow: visible; padding: 5px 0px 5px 10px; text-align: left; vertical-align: top;">Remember and celebrate the lives of your loved ones. Anniversaries of a lost loved one can be a difficult time for friends and family, but it can also be a time for remembrance and honoring them. It may be that you decide to collect donations to a favorite charity of the deceased, passing on a family name to a baby or planting a garden in memory. What you choose is up to you, as long as it allows you to honor that unique relationship in a way that feels right to you.

The ofrenda especially covers the last aspect; remembering and celebrating the lives of your loved ones. My sciatica flared up in about October of last year. It really had me tied down and is a big pain in the butt literally. It is a pain starting in the butt area and then going down the back of the leg. It was mostly in my right side but now effects both sides. It was so bad I just wanted to lie around all day. Even sitting made it hurt. I had difficulty with small tasks like loading or unloading the dish washer.

Urgent care took x-rays and diagnosed the problem. Initially I took some pills for pain--some for the day and some at night, but the majority of the treatment was physical therapy. The doctor suggested no longer have my wallet in my back pocket, so I don't. It is always in front now. I guess sitting on a wallet can flare things up.

Physical therapy focused on stretches, and strengthening the core. I am very good at using the stretches for any little tightness, or sometimes just to prevent the tightness. Squats are the most important core strengthening exercise. i could do better with this. I have changed from bending to do the dish washer to using squats. It helps. Also for the core is the gorilla walk, and what I call they round dance. This is a side to side step, while gorilla walk is a frontward step while squatting a bit. Both steps can be done with bands.

Just tightening or engaging the core is helpful. The stretches I do I stand against something firm, and then lean back. This really helps. Also while sitting or lying down, putting the foot on the knee, and then pulling the knee towards the other side for about 20 seconds, and then pushing it down for ten seconds. This also really helps. I also like to walk and this helps, but I must be careful not to overdo.
Billy Wardlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09662970743545171897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423628164028406283.post-35098519644005959722021-08-16T10:52:00.004-07:002021-08-16T12:47:31.925-07:00The Covid Epidemic and Opioid Addiction.
This site is a synopsis of articles from all 50 states with relation to the opioid epidemic an increase in overdoses due to heroin, opioids and fentanyl. This epidemic, in parts of the country, including San Francisco, has taken more lives than COVID. There have been more OD's in 2020 than any other year. However this health issue seems to have been forgotten. The news talks of COVID and very little is heard about the drug epidemic. Making matters worse is a shorter of injectable medication to counteract an OD.
Billy Wardlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09662970743545171897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423628164028406283.post-38500374663401205732021-04-28T07:54:00.003-07:002021-04-28T07:54:24.349-07:00Positive Thinking Book: The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect: How Your Life Matters by Andy Andrews, Simple Truths LLC, Naperville, Illinois, 2009.
This book presents the idea that everything we do has an effect on others. Mr. Andrews presents a compelling story about the influence of the butterfly effect, and how it bounces from one person to the next--the effect you have on one, will effect the effect that person has on the next and so on and so on. This book inspires all of us to be better, more gracious to others. I recommend anything of Andy Andrews.
Billy Wardlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09662970743545171897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423628164028406283.post-6079549146405892892021-04-27T21:41:00.002-07:002021-04-27T21:41:43.964-07:00Insurance: It Shouldn't Be So Hard
Having retired, and the moving out of state to Arizona, I could no longer continue with the insurance I had before. I though since I was a vested employee the insurance would continue. Instead I will be reimbursed $750 a month, but have to find my own insurance. I signed up for an insurance, some kind of a strange plan, At first payment wouldn't go through but we finally were able to put it on Sheri's card. However the next month again the payment wouldn't go through. The bank said it was a fraudulent company. The company said no, but anyway I decided to change. Sheri and Tony signed up for a similar plan but through Prudential Insurance. I went directly to Blue Cross for insurance. Sort of steep based on my income and preexisting conditions. But I have insurance and will be reimbursed for most of it. I think the old insurance covered the bills I had and I will update the medical office of the new insurance when I go to my next appointment. I thought they had dental. as well but I am being told no. I need to get dental and vision benefits now.
Billy Wardlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09662970743545171897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423628164028406283.post-77918339398595742562021-04-24T12:55:00.006-07:002021-04-24T12:55:55.328-07:00Weight Wars #3
I have posted twice before, but not for the past two years. I saw my weight go from 298 in 2003 to 248 in 2019 and 245 in 2019. My weight has not dropped much more. Now I weigh about 240. I am no longer grossly obese but just obese. However I have been stagnant in any further weight loss. I was able to take pills to help with weight loss, and then Victoza shot. Victoza helped me lose about ten pounds but then no more. However it is going to take something more to get me below the 240 line and continue my trek to 190 which is my ultimate goal. I was doing better before Covid made everything be work from home. Then I did not walk near as much as I no longer took the train to work. I have not gotten into a pattern of exercise since having retired. I keep thinking something will change. I guess that something will need to be myself. I need to lose that last 50 lbs to be as healthy as I can be.

So I commit to a half hour walk or activity everyday. I commit to doing exercises to help my frozen shoulder. I commit to watch my food intake. I commit to no food after 8 p.m.
Billy Wardlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09662970743545171897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423628164028406283.post-7901074414265747082020-05-12T15:44:00.001-07:002022-10-15T23:29:50.980-07:00Dealing With Stress? Shelter in place is stressful; and going to work when there is risk of Covid is also stressful. There is no way around it right now, our lives are stressful. A little stress can be good. Most of us perform better with some stress; but not too much.
Too much stress can lead to anxiety issues, depression, fatigue, headaches and muscle tension, insomnia, stomach problems and weakened immune system. People who experience too much stress for too long become prone to illnesses, mental and physical.
Too often the response is, I'll use alcohol, or I'll get stoned and just forget my problems. These responses do not get rid of the problem, although admittedly you care about your problems less when you are stoned or high or drunk. When you sober up, the problems are still there, and in addition you have the consequences of the substance. These consequences can include substance use disorder, health conditions, O.D., family issues and trouble at school or work.
May I suggest some alternatives to substances for dealing with stress. Regular exercise is the most important. Exercise releases endorphins which produce a natural high without the negative consequences. Other activities to deal with stress are playing video games, meditate, walking, talking with a friend, doing something creative, play music, relax, take a hot bath, favorite TV program or movie.
Using Motivational Interviewing for Success in Counseling.

This was a good review and a good opportunity to go over the ideas that have come through the substance abuse treatment realm but now are part of therapy in the mental health side as well. The idea behind motivational interviewing is that is a client driven focus, and you are determining the client’s readiness to change so they can direct their own willingness to be in services. It posts five levels of change in a progressive type fashion, precontemplation, contemplation, ready for action, action and maintenance. The four skills used are: “OARS,” Open-ended questions, Affirmation, Reflective Listening and Summary Statements. In this context you use these skills to recognize and then tease out change-talk. You do this by employing DEARS: Develop Discrepancy, Express Empathy, Amplify Ambivalence, Roll with Resistance and Support Self-Efficacy.

I am noting my weight currently compared to what it was in the past, about 15 years ago. I have improved, but have much more to accomplish. Mine has not been some fancy diet but watching what I eat, and carbs, and walking more.
I published a previous post about my weight and being half way to not being obese, down from 298 to 248. I can now say I am down another 5 lbs but still only half way. The difference is an adjustment in my height. I guess I am shrinking, which means I have another 10 pounds to lose before escaping the obesity line. So down 55 pounds with a goal of 55 pounds more. I hope this sharing will motivate me, as my life is at stake.

I came across something really scary: a record of my weight from 2001 through 2003. I started at 292 in December of 2001. However I was down to 285 by mid January; only to blossom back up by the end of the year. My last recorded weight in 2002, early December, was 292. Then I became my heaviest. I started 2003 at 298. That is just gross. That is the most I have weighed my entire life. That is 100 pounds above the obese line. I recorded that by the end of 2003 I was back to 285. I have continued a mostly downward spiral, with significance periods of getting stuck. I am half of the way to the obese line--in other words I am 50 pounds lighter than my heaviest with another 50 to go.
What have been the consequences. I have diabetes and tinnitus, and sleep apnea and high blood pressure. Weight is a contributing factor in all these areas. I hope when I am no longer obese--some of these health issues will be resolved. I would be grateful if just one or two would improve and I not have to take so many medications.

Crisis services are now available via text messaging in Santa Clara County.

<div class="yiv1081094235MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #26282a; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
About half of adults will experience a mental health challenge over the course of their lifetime, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now, emotionally or mentally distressed residents in Santa Clara County have access to free, text-based, confidential assistance from trained Crisis Text Line counselors by texting “RENEW” to 741741. The support is free, accessible 24/7, and confidential. Learn more at www.sccbhsd.org/suicideprevention

To date, Crisis Text Line, a national organization, has answered more than 84 million messages. The organization has more than 4,500 active Crisis Counselors with strict safeguards and protocols to provide care, safety, and confidentiality for each user. “The ability to offer text-based support to people in need adds a new dimension to our outreach services, and is an especially important tool to offer to young people in Santa Clara County,” said Toni Tullys, Director of the County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Services Department, adding, “It’s important to make access to counseling easy and approachable, and text-based support does both.”

Here is some advice from FEMA on how to do so. There are three steps: Collect, share and practice.
Collect: This refers to gathering the necessary information to implement your plan. It also includes writing this down. Information needed includes household information, school caregiver and childcare information, out of town contact, emergency meeting places (more than one including by home, and out of town, and any other important information.
Share: means to share your written copy with all involved, your family members and those who are your contacts.
Practice: Putting your plan into action before time will make sure it will work in an emergency. Remember texting is best because it requires less band width. It will also be important to conserve phone energy. Best to keep phones fully charged, and consider solar power for recharging in an emergency.
This is one of my goals. However I was a bit disappointed in the suggestions. The article is about exercises to lose belly fat. It suggests the best involve weights--High-Intensity Strength Training. Studies show strength training targets belly fat better than cardio. One of the exercises is the incline push-up. This is something I can do, and there are chances to do this many times a day. The other exercises seem too complicated and I can't really see them in my brain. I need a video or someone to guide me I guess. The photographs were taken by James Nachtwey. There are now annually in the United States 64,000 drug overdose deaths. Life expectancy in the United States is going down as a result. The pictures are very graphic. They show people who are overdosed, emaciated, homeless. Some are in coffins. They show pregnant mothers with the effects of drug usage. They show families that are devastated as a result of addiction. Stories are also presented; but it is the pictures that drive this message home. This is really bad stuff.
