Health Is Vital

Health is taken for granted, until you can't any more. In this blog I hope to put down on paper some of the articles I come across and want to remember, about health. I will be personalizing these articles to apply to me. I am diabetic, over weight, have high blood pressure and tinnitus, so these are the things you will find here. I will include nutrition, exercise, and holistic health, and many other ideas. I work in the health profession, particularly mental health, and have an interest in suicide prevention; so these topics will also be covered in this blog. Please, if you are suffering reach out. Our county health and crisis line is 1-855-278-4204.

Breathing

I attended a safety training this week.  Two of the presentations including breathing exercises.  Also Employee Wellness was there with handouts, including those about breathing.  I share one of those which seems a very good method.  One of the presenters including gather up the negative with the breath in, and then throwing it away with the breath out; then gathering up the positive with the breath in, and letting it flow over you, or putting it into your heart, with the breath out.

The Culture of the Hard of Hearing

This handout was given to me when a worker from Family and Children's Services, which has the contract to provide mental health treatment in Santa Clara County to those who are hard of hearing, came and provided a brief presentation to us at the call center.  I invite comments from those of the deaf community as to whether they agree with this.

Foods that Help Fight Diabetes from Everyday Health

This article from Everyday Health promotes six foods to fight diabetes or prevent diabetes.  These foods are:

Cherries; I like cherries, but don't buy them very often because of the cost.  Maybe that will have to change.  Studies have found a significant difference with frozen cherries, and the benefits will be greater with fresh.

Black beans;  I love black beans and I select them whenever I get a chance, but maybe that is not often enough.  They are especially good with a little parmesan.

Boysenberries; Again I like Black and Boysenberries, (I am not sure of the difference) however they are so darn expensive.  Sometimes you can find them at a park and then I really enjoy.

Blueberries; Here I have a problem, I just don't care for blueberries.  I would much prefer strawberries or raspberries.

Sweet potatoes; Here the issue is the type of sweet potato.  I really like the kind we had in Argentina, which are nothing like yams.  I need to keep my eye out, because if I could replace regular potatoes with sweet potatoes every once in a while, I am sure it would help a great deal.

Blue corn; Here I have the biggest problem yet.  I am not sure where you would get blue corn.  However, I guess this makes an adventure.  Because it is grown in Mexico and the Southwest, I think I will start with some Mexican super markets.

Values Exercise: Wishing Well

This is a values exercise, which is helpful for people to look at what is really important to them.  From there you can begin to help them live a life which is more congruent to what is important.
If I could have anything in the world.

Pornography Kills Intimacy

Here is a Good Article on the Effect of Pornography on Young Women in Australia.  It is amazing how relationships between young women and young men are being shaped by pornography.  Something has got to be done about this.  Women have been objectified too much.  They are not object for the pleasure of boys and men.

Suicide, Youth and Utah

This article now indicates that suicide is the leading cause of death among adolescents in Utah.  This is significant.  The article includes ideas on suicide prevention.  They are losing 600 youth a year.
